Video Service Corp. (VSC) have given us the heads-up that they’ve acquired the rights to release Portlandia on home video in the United States (where it already has aired on IFC) and Canada (where it will be broadcasting soon). The funny show is being planned for both DVD and high-def Blu-ray Disc, and right now is being projected for release on December 6th. In case you’re not familiar with the program, here’s a description of it taken from IFC’s website:

The 6-part IFC Original short-based comedy series PORTLANDIA – created, written by and starring Fred Armisen (SNL) and Carrie Brownstein (vocalist/guitarist, WILD FLAG, Sleater-Kinney) – premiered on IFC Friday, January 21, 2011. Each episode’s character-based shorts draw viewers into “Portlandia,” the creators’ dreamy and absurd rendering of Portland, Oregon.

“I love Portlandia. It really represents so much of what I love culturally, musically and in so many other ways,” said Fred Armisen. “This started as just a fun summer activity for Carrie and me. We’d be hanging out in Portland and shooting whatever made us laugh, and that evolved into Portlandia.”

PORTLANDIA’s inhabitants include but are not limited to: the owners of a feminist book store; a militant bike messenger; an artsy couple who attach cut-outs of birds to everything (“put a bird on it!”); an organic farmer who turns out to be a cult leader; an adult hide and seek league; and a punk rock couple negotiating a “safe word” to help govern their love life. The first episode depicts Armisen and Brownstein meeting with the Mayor of Portland (Kyle MacLachlan) who solicits the duo to write a new theme song for the city. This segment features a cameo from the real mayor of Portland (Sam Adams) playing the assistant to MacLachlan’s “mayor.” Much of the series’ original music is written and performed by Armisen and Brownstein.

An assortment of guest stars inhabit PORTLANDIA, including Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Sex & The City), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Selma Blair (Legally Blonde, Hellboy), Heather Graham (The Hangover), Edie McClurg (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Kumail Nanjiani (Michael & Michael Have Issues), Jason Sudeikis (SNL, The Cleveland Show), and Gus Van Sant (Milk). Singer/songwriter Aimee Mann also guest stars, alongside James Mercer (The Shins), and local Portland musicians Jenny Conlee and Colin Meloy (The Decemberists) and Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney).

George Lopez takes an LA hood life and hip-hop tour with his most badass friend…Aubrey Plaza.

It’s all well and good giving your spec script a taboo-busting, attention-grabbing title: names like “Fuck Buddies” or “I Want To Fuck Your Sister” certainly stand out from the pack, and both of those examples landed on the Black List in past years. But when it comes to actually making the damn thing, you’re gong to have to make some kind of compromise, or you’re going to have a movie that doesn’t have any advertising.

Such was the dilemma facing “The Hand Job.” Written and directed by comic Maggie Carey, the provocative title was entirely appropriate, as the plot revolves, as Carey’s husband Bill Hader told us a few months back, around a “type-A, studious girl who graduates high school and hasn’t done anything with a guy. The summer before college she decides that she has to find out how to do everything in order to be properly prepared, so she makes a very serious bullet list of everything, like… hand-job, titty-fuck, blow-job, fingering, and just kinda checks one off every time she does it. She’s being the aggressor and is very straight-forward about it, like ‘Okay, so I’m going to give you a hand-job now.’ And the guys are very taken aback about it, especially her straight-laced friends.”

But of course, no TV station will carry commercials for a movie called “The Hand Job,” despite its A-grade comic cast, which is toplined by “Parks and Recreation” star Aubrey Plaza, and also includes Hader, SNL co-star Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”), Mae Whitman (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”), Johnny Simmons (“The Conspirator”), Donald Glover (“Community”), Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights”), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (“Superbad”), Scott Porter (“The Good Wife”) and D.C. Pierson & Dominic Dierkes (“Mystery Team”). Phew!

EW talked to Hader recently, who revealed that the film, which The Mark Gordon Company are backing, has been retitled “The To-Do List” which, frankly, we like a little more: it’s still a little risque, but without bashing you over the head. Hader also spilled a few beans on his character saying, “I play her boss. She works at pool and there’s a whole big thing with her and me. Let’s just say I may not have the best intentions.” The film’s still looking for final financing, so there’s no word yet on when it might lens, but with a cast like this, we’re prepared to make up the budgetary shortfall ourselves. Or we would be, if we had millions of dollars.
