Marvel’s Agatha All Along will draw inspiration from several spooky cinematic sources.
Following Marvel’s D23 presentation, GamesRadar unveiled part of Kathryn Hahn and her co-stars’ interview with Total Film regarding what fans can expect from a depowered Agatha Harkness in her WandaVision spinoff. Aesthetically, Hahn’s co-star Joe Locke teased every Agatha All Along episode imitating “a different classic horror/thriller film that it is basing itself off,” citing The Exorcist and Rosemary’s Baby as primary examples. He was also excited by the show’s tribute to The Goonies, teasing, “There was one day that Jac sent Kevin a picture of something, and he replied literally saying, ‘Oh my God, it’s The Goonies.’ So, that one for me was the big one.”
Another major film reference, per Aubrey Plaza, is 1996’s The Craft, describing the supernatural cult classic as “hardcore scary” while noting how, like Agatha All Along, The Craft “really rides the line. There are times when it’s really funny and almost has this campy quality, but then there are times that it just gets really dark and grounded and scary.” Hahn, meanwhile, teased a lighter, albeit still spooky side to Agatha’s callbacks, revealing, “There’s some Nancy Meyers in there. There is, [as] for witches, some of the friendship of Hocus Pocus – the deep, sweet friendships – and also the terror of Practical Magic, of stuff like Poltergeist or E.T.” The new D23 trailer previewed Agatha assembling a team of “covenless witches” to reclaim the power Wanda Maximoff took from her, a task that requires walking the “Witches’ Road” and facing the mystical obstacles it throws at her group.
