Aubrey Plaza Named One of “The 100 Most Influential People of 2023”

April 15, 2023   Comments Off on Aubrey Plaza Named One of “The 100 Most Influential People of 2023”   News

Aubrey Plaza has been named one of the 100 Most Influential People of 2023 by Time magazine! Check out the lovely write-up by Aubrey’s Parks and Recreation co-star and friend, Amy Pohler, at Time.com.

We are all watching Aubrey Plaza and can’t take our eyes off her. I met Aubrey, a deeply versatile actor and producer, almost 15 years ago on Parks and Recreation, where she played the droll and mischievous intern April Ludgate. I knew two things immediately: I was working with a determined and profoundly talented woman with big plans, and I had met a dear friend for life.

Her work over the past decade has been acutely truthful and always surprising—whether conveying fear-based choices in Emily the Criminal, manic breakdowns in Black Bear, chilly secret keeping in The White Lotus, or whatever big and ballsy swing is up next in Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.

Aubrey loves an outsider. She roots for the underdog. She befriends the misunderstood. She has learned the glorious freedom that comes from not wanting your approval. But don’t mistake that cool demeanor as ambivalence. She cares deeply about her craft and her friends and has become one of the most interesting actors working today. Plus, she speaks Spanish and can hit a fastball.

We are all watching Aubrey Plaza, but she is watching us. And she is on to you.

Original “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” Cast Returns for More Chaos in Anime Series

April 2, 2023   Comments Off on Original “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” Cast Returns for More Chaos in Anime Series   News

Hollywood reunion content has been milked dry in a major shift toward playing into audience nostalgia. Early in the pandemic, casts reunited over Zoom for table reads. While that happens less now, it’s only been replaced by revivals and years-too-late sequels missing the core of what made the film and television program great to begin with. But as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World returns as an anime series on Netflix, its creators are going all in.

Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead reprising their roles as Scott Pilgrim and Romana Flowers, respectively, were the biggest pieces to keeping this puzzle from falling apart. But the additional returns, all through voice acting, feature Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pune, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, and more.

“We’re getting the band back together!” Bryan Lee O’Malley, author and artist of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series, and BenDavid Grabinski shared in a statement. “We can’t wait for fans and newcomers alike to see what we and our partners at Science SARU have been cooking up. It’s going to be a wild ride.”

O’Malley and Grabinski will serve as executive producers, writers, and showrunners for the series, the official name of which will be announced later. Edgar Wright, who wrote and produced the original Scott Pilgrim vs the World film, will executive produce.

“One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim,” Wright shared. “Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&A’s, remembrances and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project. Until now…”

He added: “Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer BenDavid Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also…well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.”

Hollywood Latino Leaders Form Visionary Alliance to Combat Disinformation in Media

March 15, 2023   Comments Off on Hollywood Latino Leaders Form Visionary Alliance to Combat Disinformation in Media   News

They’re the most disproportionately underrepresented demographic in Hollywood, an industry that makes its headquarters in a county where they comprise the plurality of the population. And even as other systemically marginalized groups make prominent and visible strides in pop culture, Latinos have remained caught in a cycle of development hell, with projects created by and centering them canceled (or permanently shelved) even as they continue to prop up a significant share of the box office as audience members.

“There was an overabundance and then a complete 180 has now happened. The graveyard of Latino shows in the last five years, it has been a decimation,” writer Gloria Calderón Kellett tells The Hollywood Reporter. “In a row One Day at a Time, Vida, Diary of a Future President, Gentefied, all of these shows came out, all of them 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. They didn’t support the shows with marketing. They didn’t put money behind those shows, and those shows are now all gone.”

In part to rectify the systemic issues that have led to this downturn as well as address other concerns in the entertainment industry and beyond, Calderón Kellett is linking up with a number of other Latino luminaries in Hollywood to form the first-ever Visionary Alliance for the National Hispanic Media Coalition. Alliance members will lend their professional expertise to longstanding NHMC entertainment initiatives such as its Series Scriptwriters Program and Latinx Stream Showcase and also get involved in the nonprofit’s social justice and policy advocacy work.

“NHMC is about representation from the White House to Hollywood,” the coalition’s president and CEO Brenda Victoria Castillo tells THR. “The policies and decisions that are made in D.C. affect Hollywood. The way Hollywood decides they’re going to portray Latinos is the way we’re perceived and the way the public treats us, and it’s a vicious cycle.”

The inaugural Alliance members also include Ismael Cruz Córdova (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power), Wilson Cruz, Rosario Dawson, Diane Guerrero (Encanto, Doom Patrol), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), Eva Longoria, Gabriel Luna (The Last of Us), Justina Machado, Encanto producer Yvett Merino, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Danny Pino (Mayans M.C., Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), Aubrey Plaza, Gina Torres, Wilmer Valderrama and Lisa Vidal (Being Mary Jane).
