NBC has given one of its Thursday night comedies an early renewal this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, NBC has issued a third-season pickup for the comedy Parks and Recreation.

It was said that the early renewal was done strictly for scheduling and production reasons, to lock in the actors for a new season. A network rep said that it didn’t reflect on the rest of its Thursday night comedy slate. Community, The Office and 30 Rock are all expected to return next season as well.

Parks and Recreation stars Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Aziz Ansari, Paul Schneider, Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Chris Pratt, Nick O’Heir, Retta and airs on Thursday nights at 8:30 PM ET on NBC.

“Parks and Recreation” Gets a Full Second Season!

October 23, 2009   Comments Off on “Parks and Recreation” Gets a Full Second Season!   News, TV Shows

NBC has renewed “Parks and Recreation” for an entire season – so we will get a complete season 2!

NBC has picked up full seasons of Thursday-night comedies “Community” and “Parks and Recreation,” as well as its Wednesday night medical drama “Mercy.”

All three have shown stability in their time periods in recent weeks.

“We are very pleased with the critical and audience reaction to our wonderful new comedy ‘Community,'” said NBC entertainment president Angela Bromstad. “The cast and producers are delivering a first-rate, quality show that is very promising as the newest of NBC’s first-rate Thursday-night comedies.”

About “Mercy,” Bromstad added: “This drama has found a dedicated audience and continues to build in the ratings. We’ve seen future episodes, and we’re confident “Mercy” can be a strong player for us.”

Regarding Amy Poehler’s “Parks,” Bromstad said, “Parks and Recreation” has proven to be a steady performer for us on Thursday nights and gets better with every show.”

Absent from the pickup list: Monday night medical thriller “Trauma.”

“Community,” “Parks” and “Mercy” have been modest performers, but this back-nine order gives the trio some breathing room to potentially improve. NBC, the final broadcaster to order additional episodes of their new shows this fall, also has a limited inventory of scripted content to fill any open slots. The network has “Chuck” on deck, which has been speculated might replace “Trauma” should NBC pull the medical thriller.

NBC has “Parenthood” and “Day One” for midseason, though “Parenthood” has been delayed because of the illness of co-star Maura Tierney who was recently replaced by Lauren Graham, and “Day One” has been reduced to a mini-series, at least for now. Additionally, NBC is prepping multi-camera midseason comedy “100 Questions,” which has undergone significant casting changes since the pilot.

“Mercy” has averaged a 2.1 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 7.8 million viewers and has boosted the time period 37% compared with the network’s performance in the time period last season. “Community” has averaged a 2.6 rating, and 5.7 million. Though it debuted last season, “Parks and Recreation” was brought back for 13 episodes this fall and has averaged a 2.1 and 4.8 million.

RISING STAR: AUBREY PLAZA

September 7, 2009   Comments Off on RISING STAR: AUBREY PLAZA   News

STANDING OUT in a movie with Seth Rogen can’t be easy, but that’s just what New York transplant Aubrey Plaza has done in the new Judd Apatow comedy “Funny People.”

“By the way,” Post film critic Kyle Smith wrote in his review, “remember this actress’ name: Aubrey Plaza. She’s awesome.”

That name, as the 25-year-old recently explained, is an unusual combination: Plaza, she says, is “Puerto Rican Spanish,” while Aubrey was inspired by the title of a song by band Bread in the ’70s. A native of Delaware, Plaza has been making her comic mark since starting college at New York University — a school she chose partly for its proximity to famed comedy group The Upright Citizens Brigade. A former intern on “Saturday Night Live,” she’s worked on two shows featuring female alums of the late night show, doing a quick turn as an NBC page on Tina Fey’s “30 Rock,” and more recently enjoying a regular part on Amy Poehler’s “Parks and Recreation.”

Named a “Hot Comic” by Rolling Stone and one of “10 Comics to Watch” by Variety, Plaza is maintaining momentum with an indie movie, “Mystery Team,” out this year. Also in the can is a project with a name as memorable as her own: “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,” a comedy with Michael Cera set for release next year.

“Funny People” is in theaters now.

Any scoop on Parks & Recreation? Are they still working on the pit this season, or have they abandoned it for a new project?
