Aubrey Plaza Set To Host Spirit Awards

November 27, 2018   Comments Off on Aubrey Plaza Set To Host Spirit Awards   Uncategorized

Deadline — Aubrey Plaza has been set to host the 2019 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which are set to air live from Santa Monica on February 23 on IFC. She will take over duties from John Mulaney and Nick Kroll, who co-hosted the marquee indie film event for the past two years.

This year’s ceremony will include a Best Feature race among Eighth Grade, First Reformed, If Beale Street Could Talk, Leave No Trace and You Were Never Really Here.

The search for a great Spirit Awards host is never easy,” said Film Independent president Josh Welsh in a release Monday. “This year we said, let’s find someone funny, smart, a cinephile, being a great actor wouldn’t hurt, and it would be an added bonus if they’ve previously won a Spirit Award. Then we realized, oh wait, that’s Aubrey Plaza! So thank you Aubrey, for hosting the Spirits!

Plaza won a Spirit Award last year as a producer of Ingrid Goes West, which took the Best First Feature win. She also starred in the Matt Spicer pic opposite Elizabeth Olsen. Her indie film cred includes recent starring roles in Little Hours and An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, and she’s next up the Child’s Play remake opposite Brian Tyree Henry due out next year.

The Spirits in recent years have generally been a predictor of what’s to come the following day at the Oscars, with Best Picture wins lining up between AMPAS and Film Independent for Moonlight in 2017, Spotlight in 2016, Birdman in 2015 and and 2014’s 12 Years a Slave.

Last year, the Spirits named Get Out its Best Feature, while the the Oscars went for The Shape of Water (the Fox Searchlight release wasn’t eligible as its production cost exceeded the Spirits’ maximum $20 million threshold.)

MTV Movie Awards 2017: Aubrey Plaza plays Eleven in Stranger Things meets Get Out parody

Aubrey might not have attended this year’s MTV Movie Awards, but she still surprised us by playing Eleven in a Stranger Things/Get Out parody featuring Adam Devine.

Weird nightmare realms was an unexpected (but absolutely fitting) trend of last year, so it’s no surprise the MTV Movie Awards capitalised on a convenient mash-up.

Get Out’s Sunken Place and Stranger Things’ the Upside Down came together for a short parody featuring the show’s host, Workaholics’ Adam Devine.

Accidentally sent there by Allison Williams and her teacup, Devine found himself coming face-to-face with Jillian Bell’s Barb and a particularly unwanted take on the Demigorgon, alongside Trey Songz’s Lucas.

If Bell’s Barb wasn’t already fairly perfect casting, she was then followed by the queen-of-creep herself, Aubrey Plaza, turning up as Eleven and introducing a place where Taco Bell is called Quesadilla Ding-Dong, Tracy Morgan is the Pope, and Hillary Duff is the president.

We Don’t Know Where This Weird Show With Aubrey Plaza And Nathan Fillion Came From, But We’re Glad It Exists

On Monday, a Reddit post popped up saying it contained a “Never-aired TV Pilot featuring Aubrey Plaza and Nathan Fillion.” And when we looked into it, we couldn’t find the video anywhere else — or any mention of the show either. Our best guess is that this is either the pilot or a pre-pilot episode for Nightmare Time, a pilot from Plaza that TBS recently opted to not pursue.

In any case: Aubrey Plaza! Nathan Fillion! A weird group of teens! An axe murderer!

The only other hint is that the opening frames of the new video are the ending frames of The Dark Side Of Ring Pop!, a video by sketch group Delaware featuring Plaza:
