Aubrey Plaza Joins ‘A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III’
Aubrey Plaza (who regularly kills it on NBC’s Parks and Recreation) has joined the cast of Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charlie Swan III. The indie stars Charlie Sheen (essentially playing himself) as a successful graphic designer whose fame and fortune have made him irresistible to women. His life goes south quickly when his girlfriend breaks up with him, and he starts having delirious fantasies about his long list of exes. Variety reports that Plaza will play a producer who works with Sheen at his design company. The cast also includes Jason Schwartzman, who shared some screen time with Plaza in Judd Apatow’s Funny People.
Aubrey Plaza Starring Comedy “The Hand Job” Retitled “The To-Do List”
It’s all well and good giving your spec script a taboo-busting, attention-grabbing title: names like “Fuck Buddies” or “I Want To Fuck Your Sister” certainly stand out from the pack, and both of those examples landed on the Black List in past years. But when it comes to actually making the damn thing, you’re gong to have to make some kind of compromise, or you’re going to have a movie that doesn’t have any advertising.
Such was the dilemma facing “The Hand Job.” Written and directed by comic Maggie Carey, the provocative title was entirely appropriate, as the plot revolves, as Carey’s husband Bill Hader told us a few months back, around a “type-A, studious girl who graduates high school and hasn’t done anything with a guy. The summer before college she decides that she has to find out how to do everything in order to be properly prepared, so she makes a very serious bullet list of everything, like… hand-job, titty-fuck, blow-job, fingering, and just kinda checks one off every time she does it. She’s being the aggressor and is very straight-forward about it, like ‘Okay, so I’m going to give you a hand-job now.’ And the guys are very taken aback about it, especially her straight-laced friends.”
But of course, no TV station will carry commercials for a movie called “The Hand Job,” despite its A-grade comic cast, which is toplined by “Parks and Recreation” star Aubrey Plaza, and also includes Hader, SNL co-star Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat (“Arrested Development”), Mae Whitman (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”), Johnny Simmons (“The Conspirator”), Donald Glover (“Community”), Connie Britton (“Friday Night Lights”), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (“Superbad”), Scott Porter (“The Good Wife”) and D.C. Pierson & Dominic Dierkes (“Mystery Team”). Phew!
EW talked to Hader recently, who revealed that the film, which The Mark Gordon Company are backing, has been retitled “The To-Do List” which, frankly, we like a little more: it’s still a little risque, but without bashing you over the head. Hader also spilled a few beans on his character saying, “I play her boss. She works at pool and there’s a whole big thing with her and me. Let’s just say I may not have the best intentions.” The film’s still looking for final financing, so there’s no word yet on when it might lens, but with a cast like this, we’re prepared to make up the budgetary shortfall ourselves. Or we would be, if we had millions of dollars.

Aubrey Plaza Says “Scott Pilgrim” Casting Was ‘Meant To Be’
Now that “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” has wrapped principal photography, the movie’s many cast members are starting to talk about their work on the Edgar Wright-directed comic book adaptation. Today, actress Aubrey Plaza is getting in on that action.
Plaza plays Julie Powers in “Scott Pilgrim,” the occasional girlfriend of Scott’s band mate Stephen Stills. The actress spoke with Making Of about the film’s “perfectly” weird faithfulness to the Bryan Lee O’Malley-created graphic novels. “There’s a lot of weird, really perfectly casted people,” said Plaza. “Alison Pill really looks like Kim Pine, Michael [Cera] really looks like Scott Pilgrim in a weird way, so everybody kind of weirdly looks like their character. You almost feel like it was meant to be.”
The actress is perhaps best known for her role in last summer’s “Funny People,” and while Plaza had plenty of comedy to wade through in “Scott Pilgrim,” she admitted that there was an entirely new element for her in the movie’s action component. “It’s kind of a crazy movie because it’s a comedy, but it’s also an action film,” she said. “It was a different way of working—a lot more technical, not a lot of improv. There’s no room to improvise when there’s a blue screen and camera craning at these weird times. You have to really be hitting all of the beats and everything. So it was a learning experience for me, because I’m used to kind of just saying whatever I want.”
And who says learning can’t be fun? Certainly not Plaza, who had nothing but great things to say about filming the comic book movie. “It was really fun,” she said. “Edgar is awesome. He’s really great. Everyone in the cast was really great—they’re all a combination of really funny but also really great actors.”
